Black Bear announces that Black Bear’s carbon black has received an official Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Bronze Certificate, assessed by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA). This is the first time that any carbon black in the market has received this certification.
The certification activities led to a reconfirmation that Black Bear’s carbon black has extremely low levels of harmful Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). A low level of PAH is becoming increasingly important given health concerns and increased scrutiny over hazardous substances under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation.
The Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program is an independent, third-party verified certification program that certifies products and materials that are developed to respect human and environmental health, designed for future use cycles, and that utilize clean energy and water throughout the supply chain. Certified products are required to show continuous improvement every two years.
“This certification is a clear demonstration of our commitment to accelerating the transition towards a circular economy. We are pleased that we can now offer carbon black users a real and officially certified choice for selecting clean and green materials” said Martijn Lopes Cardozo, CEO Black Bear.
Black Bear Carbon is a pioneering circular-economy, technology-based company. Its patented technology facilitates the harvesting of carbon black from waste tires in a way that adds upcycled value. Carbon black is used as a pigment in plastics, inks and paints as well as a reinforcing agent in rubber and tires. Current manufacturers make carbon black by burning oil (the “furnace process”), emitting CO2 and polluting the environment. Black Bear is dedicated to producing high-quality carbon blacks from end-of-life tires in a clean, sustainable way.
